Dr. Eugenia Ruiz

Dr. Eugenia Ruiz, 99, passed away Wednesday, August 25, 2021.
Eugenia was born Friday, June 2, 1922 in Cuba to the late Carlos and Eugenia (Alvarez) Porro.  She was forced to flee from Cuba in 1959 when Fidel Castro assumed military and political power as Cuba's prime minister.  While in Cuba, she became a lawyer and attended the University of Havana.  When she came to America, she graduated from the University of Akron and became a teacher and interpreter, teaching Spanish to kids in the public schools.  After she retired, she couldn’t quit teaching, she taught in catholic schools including St. Martha Catholic Church (Blessed Trinity).
Eugenia became lifelong friend with so many of her students who live on better because of her.  It is not what you take with you but what you leave behind.
Eugenia faithful member of Blessed Trinity Catholic Church and Primetimers (always on the bus to the casinos).  She loved visiting her family in Miami and playing poker.
In addition to her parents, Eugenia is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Jorge Ruiz.  She is survived by her dear friends, Mike and Mary Ann Crawford; daughter, Gina (Michael) Albright; 2 grandchildren; sister, Irmina Porro, cousins, Maggie and Dr. Braulio (Kathy) Cuesta; and many close friends.
Eugenia’s friends and family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Falls Village for their compassion and care.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, 10:00 am at Blessed Trinity Catholic Church, 300 East Tallmadge Avenue, Akron, Ohio 44310 with Father Joseph Warner, Celebrant.  Visitation will be Friday, 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm at Hennessy-Bagnoli-Moore Funeral Home (corner of N. Main St. and Mildred Ave.).  Eugenia's final resting place will be Tallmadge City Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Valor Home, 1121 Exeter Rd, Akron, OH 44306.
