Buford D. Newman Sr.

Buford D. Newman, 89, passed away on April 13, 2024 with family by his side and one of his favorite movies (Music Man) playing in the background.  
He was born in Nashville, TN on September 1, 1934, to the late Buford R. and Katie Jameson Newman and moved to Norton, OH when he was seven years old.  He met his future wife, the late Bette Jean Thayer, in second grade at Loyal Oak School, and they were married in 1955. Buford was a skilled cabinetmaker and carpenter, and with Bette, he built the house in Norton they called home for over 60 years. Together, they loved to camp, host family dinners, and take long road trips. Buford particularly enjoyed reminiscing about his days as a high school athlete, listening to his favorite tunes (morgue music, according to Bette) reading Louis L’amour books, and watching old westerns on TV. He should’ve been a cowboy.

Buford will be missed by his children Kelly Mocarski (Thomas), Dan Newman, and Jeannie Wigal (David Garvey); beloved grandchildren Thomas Mocarski (Christina Rhodes), Caitlin Matovich (Scott), Zack and Addison Wigal, and Clayton and Cole Newman; cherished great-grandchildren Azaleah Rhodes-Seefeldt, and Lola and Blair Matovich; dear brother and sister-in-law David (Mike) and Linda Newman, and sisters-in-law Sally McDaniel and Mildred Carneal (Ed); many nieces and nephews; and the best neighbors a man could ask for, Mark and Tami Brown and Richard and Pam Bacha. In addition to his wife and parents, Buford was preceded in death by his stepmother, Mary Newman, and sisters, Mary (Boots) Fulks and Billie Jean Maisano.

Family and friends are invited to Bacher-Moore Funeral Home, 3250 Greenwich Road, Norton, Ohio for visitation on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The funeral service will be private for immediate family only.  

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the charity of your choice.
