Clyde William Onspaugh

Obituary for: Clyde W. Onspaugh

Clyde William Onspaugh, 91, went to meet Jesus and the rest of his family in Glory Land March 5, 2018.
Clyde was born in Meadville, PA, to the late Carl H. and Helen (Pettingell) Onspaugh and lived in the Akron area most of his life. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1943 and served two terms, becoming an aircraft mechanic crew chief and attaining the rank of Sergeant. After an honorable discharge he was employed by Ray Thomas Chrysler-Plymouth in Cuyahoga Falls where he was a top-flight automotive mechanic. While working there, he became an Akron Police Reserve officer, serving for 41 years and retiring as Commander, his proudest accomplishment. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, a selfless friend and neighbor, and a true gentleman. Clyde loved his family, and he loved life; he was considered a hero by many. He loved to travel, especially to his cabin on his son's property in Stillwater, Ohio and to visit family in Georgia. He was a real character, a jokester, and loved to tell stories about his youth, his days in the Air Force, and his experiences as a police officer. One of his favorite riddles was, "Can you guess what happened here last night?" The answer was always, "It got dark!" Any time you were around this special guy, there was fun and laughter!
In addition to his parents, Clyde was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathleen Onspaugh Brady; and brothers, Charles, Carl M., and Joseph Onspaugh. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara, to whom he lovingly referred as "my woman, my woman, my wife"; son, Jeff (Sue) Onspaugh, daughters, Debbie "Dee Dee" Eller, Sherrie (Bob) Weber and Kelly (Mike) Wood; 7 grandchildren, Tim (Jen) Onspaugh, Shannon "Shay-Shay" (Carlos) DeMarino, Lisa Bowles (Michael Wright), Laura "Ordie" (Danny) Atkinson, Kaylan Rice, Gunnar Wood, and Dane Rice; 9 great-grandchildren (and another on the way), Justin and Alissa Onspaugh, James and Johnny Knoles, Cara, Los, and Tony DeMarino, Blake and Kylee Atkinson; great-great-grandchild, Julianna Inman; his little buddy, (dog) Bandit, and many other loving family and friends.
Calling hours will be Monday, March 12, 4-8 p.m. at H B Moore Funeral Home, 936 North Main Street, Akron, OH 44310 (corner of N. Main St. and Mildred Ave.). Funeral service will be Tuesday, March 13, at 11 a.m., Pastor Sherman Bailey of Chapel of Prayer Baptist presiding; reception to follow at the Chapel of Prayer Activity Center, 1811 Brittain Rd., Akron (across from Chapel Hill Mall). Clyde's final resting place will be Sunset Hills Memory Gardens where military rites will be conducted by Firestone VFW Post 3383. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to your favorite charity.

Dear Uncle Clyde - you were a bright spot when my dad (your brother Carl) was so down while his wife was ailing with Alzheimers. He always looked forward to your calls, your news and jokes - and you sent him silly gifts to cheer him up in that difficult time. I will never forget what you did for my father, and I regret we weren't closer geographically so that I could visit you. I will miss our conversations about Western movies and your model building. Thank you for being a decent and honorable man - I am proud you and I are family. May you rest in peace and be reunited with your brothers and all your loved ones in Heaven. I love you, Uncle Clyde.

Pa-paw, I miss you more than words can explain! You were such an amazing man and I love you so much. I know I will see you again one day but until then my heart will hurt for you! Love Shay-Shay!

Jim and I were saddened to hear of Officer Onspaugh passing. We worked with him over at the Chapel in the early 90's. It was an honor to work with him. Keeping his family in our thoughts and prayers. God Bless.
