Gaetano DiIorio
Monday, October 10, 1932  -  Wednesday, January 3, 2024

Gaetano DiIorio, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away with his family by his side on January 3, 2024.
Gaetano was born in Carovilli, Italy on Monday, October 10, 1932 to the late Nicola and Assunta (Sferra) DiIorio. He lived in Akron after he immigrated to the US at the age of 18 looking to start a better life. He arrived in Akron in 1951, went back to Italy in 1959 and returned to America in 1960, this time with his bride Joanne.
He worked for Donatelli Cut Stone, Bob Moore Construction, The City of Akron Highway Maintenance and Neoshred.
He was a faithful member of St. Anthony’s of Padua Church (in Akron); holding up the back of the church every Sunday with his son and grandsons. Now, the baton has officially passed down to the next generation.
Guy was a master stone carver, mason, and musician.
He was a member of the Carovillese Society and Union Abruzzese/Italian Center. He spent many hours volunteering at the spaghetti dinners and was a member of the House Committee fixing and renovating the buildings. He carved the Societa di Mutuo Soccorso Carovillese hands on the stone fountain in the Carovillese Pavilion.
In Akron and its surrounding communities, he carved numerous home addresses in stone and built garages, fireplaces, retention walls, stairs, and outdoor grills out of block and brick. In addition, he installed ceramic tile in many home bathrooms, kitchens, and living spaces. He was a master at his craft and has passed this expertise to his grandsons at Guy’s Tile and Flooring.
Since two jobs at a time were not enough, he played the mandolin and was capable of making the instrument sing beautifully. With his friends and family, he formed a band known as “The Italian Quartet”. For over 50 years, they entertained at many weddings, picnics, and parties throughout Akron, Canton, Youngstown, Cleveland and Pittsburgh.
He loved having the family over and did so frequently, especially after Church. Making coffee with his espresso machine, he would offer everyone a traditional cappuccino and pastry which we would all enjoy together after mass.  Everyone that visited, including strangers and even the mailman, was offered a Mischette (Whiskey and Anisette shot) and/or an espresso.
Guy was a man of few words but when he spoke everyone listened. He could make the family laugh with a couple one-liners, a few choice words, and his smile and laugh. He loved playing ball with Luigi (Briccolino). He will truly be missed by many and will forever be remembered with love as a great musician, a master stonemason, and a wonderful loving person.
We love you dad, and don’t worry, we will take care of mom for you.
In addition to his parents, Gaetano was preceded in death by his sister, Elvira Ricchiuti, brother-in-law, Mario Perpetua; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Guido and Matilde Putaturo.  He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joanne DiIorio; daughters, Mary (Jim) Adams, and Rita DiIorio; son, Guido (Jennifer) DiIorio; grandchildren, Nicholas (Theresa), Daniel, Joseph, Angela, Guido G. (Angela), and Vincent; great-grandchildren, Riley, Mia, Savannah, Gaetano, Matteo, Gianna, Selina, and Lorenzo; brother, Henry DiOrio; brother-in-law, Steve Ricchiuti; niece, Elizabeth (Ben) Woods and family; nephew, Peter (Melissa) Ricchiuti and family; two sister-in-laws, Filomena Perpetua and family, Pasqualina (Gennaro) DiGennaro and family; and many other loving family and friends in America, Italy and Canada.
The DiIorio Family would like to express their sincerest gratitude to the staff at Cuyahoga Falls Western Reserve Hospital ER and 3rd floor staff... "Grazie Mille".
