James “JB” Biss finished the race on July 15, 2018 and is now secure in his heavenly home with his Lord and Savior. He was born February 4,1938 in Dixonville, PA. (Nobody ever knew exactly how old he was, but now the secret is out!)
Son of Robert and Ethel Biss (deceased); and older brother to Jerry (Carol) Biss, Carol Taylor and Judith (deceased) (Luis) Biss-Ramirez, the family moved to Akron in 1944.
Jim graduated from Central High School in 1956 and the University of Akron in 1962.
He spent the majority of his career at Manchester High School teaching Biology and Media/Communications. Referred to by many as one of their favorite teachers, JB developed an unwavering loyalty to Manchester sports and was a fixture on the sidelines every Friday night with a clipboard or camera in hand. His love for his students carried him across many generations, eventually working with the grandchildren of his original students.
His creativity and love for people spurred him further into communications, filmmaking and social justice causes as he worked on documentaries and film sets. It was through this experience that he learned his special “filmmaker’s” handshake and grew his social media following on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
His top priority, however, was caring for his family including providing patient and compassionate care to his wife of 49 years, Norma (Shahan) Biss throughout her battle with Alzheimer’s disease (deceased in 2009). Together they wrangled 3 sons and a daughter through life with a focus on faith, adventure and fun. Life at the Biss household was unlike any other… with elaborate and unusual birthday parties, made up games and late night shenanigans.
The one constant in JB’s life was his love for the Lord and desire to show that love to others. Seen by many as a father figure, he prayed daily for his family, students and friends. During each “evening” run, he carried and read through his handmade scripture memory cards.
Carrying on his legacy are his children, Todd (Kris), Marc (Holly), Jon and Julie. It was important to him that each of his 11 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and extended family all understand the love Jesus has for them and God’s faithfulness through both good and difficult times.
His home-going will leave an enormous void, but we do not grieve as those without hope. (1 Thess. 4:13)
We love you Dad, JB, Pops, Jim, Jimmy, Mr. Biss, JimmyBop
