Julia "Julie" Rollins

Julie Rollins, age 92, passed away on March 20, 2021. She was born on July 5, 1928 in Akron, Ohio to the late John and Elizabeth Szakal. Her parents were Hungarian immigrants who crossed the ocean for the opportunity of a life in the United States of America. She was raised in a Christian home and learned the value of hard work and honesty.

She worked for BF Goodrich as an administrative assistant for many years until her retirement. She became a very young widow at age 59 when her husband, Ken, died while on vacation in Naples, Florida. She soon learned how to be self sufficient and independent.

She enjoyed taking bus trips with the Golden Agers group at her church. Her friendships lasted through the years. Julie immersed herself in the community with her volunteer efforts. She volunteered at the golf tournaments at Firestone Country Club for years and on election days she would work at the polls serving the Board of Elections. Her proudest accomplishment was volunteering at (Cleveland Clinic) Akron General Medical Center for 27 years. Even when she began to lose her eyesight and could no longer drive she hopped on a SCAT bus to take her back and forth. She was like the energizer bunny, she just kept going. She truly loved the friends she made and was fulfilled by helping the hospital.

She will be deeply missed by her beloved children, siblings, granddaughter and great grandchildren.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to her nurse, Susan, and the Ohio Living Rockynol Hospice staff who helped with her transition.

Julie was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth; and sister, Roselyn Smith. She is survived by daughter, Shari (Bob) Whitfield; son, Mark (Helen) Rollins; sister, Marge (Don) Rearick; brother, Arnold Szakal; granddaughter, Karey (David) Higgs; and great grandchildren, Amara, Neil, and Rosalyn.

A private memorial was held for the family.

In remembrance of Julie memorials may be made to Cleveland Clinic Akron General, c/o Volunteer Dept., 1 Akron General Ave., Akron, OH 44307 or Ohio Living Rockynol Hospice, 83 N. Miller Rd., Suite 101, Fairlawn, OH 44333.
