Larry Allen Horning
Wednesday, July 11, 1956 - Friday, July 7, 2023
Larry Allen Horning, 66, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 7, 2023. Larry was born on Wednesday, July 11, 1956, in Akron, Ohio to the late Kenneth and Dorothy (Kemmery) Horning. He is survived by his siblings, John Horning, Ed (Mary) Horning and Joan (Jerry) Denman.
At the age of nine, Larry was hit by a car while crossing the street in front of his house. He acquired a traumatic brain injury, where doctors said he would never survive and if he did, he would not have any quality of life. He left the hospital and returned home approximately four months later, where his dad worked tirelessly to regain Larry’s mobility. Over time, Larry improved with limited speech, feeding himself, and walking. By the grace of God, Larry defied the odds that were against him. He was a true fighter.
Larry later moved to the Portage Lakes area with his family until he moved to the Columbus area in 2004 to live with his sister and brother–in-law, Joan and Jerry.
Through Summit County Sheltered Workshop and Fairfield Industries, he was able to obtain employment allowing him to reintegrate in the community. He was so proud to be able to earn a wage and pay for things on his own. Although he had limited speech, Larry had an exceptional ability to communicate with others through the twinkle in his eyes and his smile. For those who took the time to get to know him, they were blessed with his unconditional love and friendship, and they immediately fell in love with him.
Larry loved to work outdoors and help his dad and later Jerry with household chores. He enjoyed bowling, caddying for Jerry at golf, attending the monthly Bucknuts gathering at Kingy’s Pizzeria in Pickerington, making latch hook rugs, being with family and friends, and most of all loved Teddy after he suffered his stroke in 2018.
After Larry’s stroke, he and teddy moved from Joan and Jerry’s to Pickaway Manor. Larry was welcomed with open arms by the residents and staff. He was involved in many activities such as singing, games and social events. His favorite day of the week was when the local church groups would visit Pickaway Manor and sing hymns. Larry loved music.
In June of this year, Larry was diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer. He was moved to Arbors at Carroll to be closer to home. During his final days, Larry was cared for by the wonderful staff at Arbors at Carroll and the staff from FAIRHOPE Hospice and Palliative Care. Teddy remained by Larry’s side until the end.
You fought the fight with the Lord beside you. No more pain, no more suffering. God has called you home.
Joan and Jerry are forever thankful for all the staff who cared for Larry and thankful for Sue and Mark who sat with Larry and prayed over him. Joan wishes to thank you for being there when she couldn’t. "God blesses others with angels and this week He blessed us with you."
The funeral service will be at 1:00 pm Friday at Bacher-Moore Funeral Home, 3326 Manchester Road, Akron, Ohio 44319 with visitation 2 HOURS PRIOR to service time on Friday. Larry's final resting place will be St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to FAIRHOPE Hospice and Palliative Care.
