Robert W. VanKirk "Van" 78, passed away Jan. 11, 2008. Born in Washington, PA to the late George and Orilla (Rhodaback) VanKirk, Van lived in the area all his life. He was a custodian/fireman for the Akron Board of Education retiring in 1986. He served in the US Navy during the Korean War and was a proud member of the Submarine Service. He was a member of the American Legion 281 and 611, Purple Heart Legion of Cuyahoga Falls, Castel DiSangro, and Eagles 2238, 2301 and 2117. Along with his parents, Van is preceded in death by his loving wife of 52 years, Dorothy; and 2 brothers. He is survived by his daughters, Elizabeth (John) Stapleton and Mary Ann (Monte) Guy; grandchildren, Brenton, Andrew and Kaitlin; and many other family and friends. Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will take place at 2:30 pm at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery with full military honors. A procession will begin and leave at 1:30 pm from the HENNESSY-BAGNOLI FUNERAL HOME, 936 N. MAIN ST., AKRON.
