Slobodan Katanic

Slobodan “Sloba” Katanic, a loving father, husband and deda met his Lord and Savior and reunited with his son Laza on March 28, 2024.

Born on April 20, 1949, in the village of Stapar, Yugoslavia, Sloba immigrated to the United States as a young man and met his devoted wife, Mirjana. They married six months later and throughout their marriage, Mira cared for Sloba, embodying the vow “in sickness and in health.”  Sloba and Mirjana went on to have 5 children for whom their love and devotion knew no bounds. Together, they taught their children to love the Lord without exception.

For over 30 years, Sloba worked as a skilled carpenter and machinist at Chrysler. He worked nights at Chrysler and by day, built houses. After retirement in 2009, Sloba continued to build furniture and could often be found renovating his home, filling it with beautiful handmade woodwork.

Sloba made annual and sometimes biannual trips back to his hometown of Stapar, where he enjoyed his friends and family. Whether in Stapar or Norton, Sloba loved entertaining neighbors and friends in his garage. He loved people.

Sloba attended Lakeside Christian Church where he declared his outward expression of his faith through baptism on January 29, 2017. He never questioned God’s authority and whatever happened in his life, whether good or bad, he trusted God.

Above all, Sloba will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather who worked tirelessly to provide for his family. He loved his family, including both Katanic and Gicanov nephews and nieces.  He will be deeply missed by those who loved him and will never be forgotten.

Slobodan was preceded in death by his son Laza, his daughter-in-law Elena,  his parents Svetozar and Milica, his brothers Stanimir, Dusan, Zdravko, and his sisters Ljubica and Katica.

Slobodan is survived by his loving wife, Mirjana, his children: Tereza (Levi) Welling, Emi (Brian) Rowe, Vladimir (Amy) Katanic, Marianne (Scott) Barta, daughter in law Bernadette Katanic; and his grandchildren: Luke, Ana, Chase, Mira, Logan, Evelyn, Faith, and Luka.

Condolences and memories can be shared with Sloba’s family at the funeral home website of The Moore Family Funeral Home - Norton. (Mooreffh.com) Sloba will be laid to rest in a private ceremony with his wife, children and grandchildren in attendance and Pastor Petar Nenadov officiating.
